Past outing recaps

December 11, 2009 by streetangelsministry

The last couple outings have been phenomenal successes. What a blessing to continually have the opportunity to go out and physically hand out God’s love (in backpack form) to these homeless teens!

On our OB outing for 11/14/2009, our group of 10 volunteers successfully gave out 9 backpacks as well as blankets and hoodies. Our post thanksgiving outing on 11/28/2009 also yielded great results. Rain or shine, our team still hits the streets! We had 6 enthusiastic volunteers and were able to give out another 9 backpacks. One recipient was absolutely ecstatic over his pairs of new socks. Blankets and sweaters were gratefully grabbed, as warmth is hard to come by seeking shelter by the coast. Here are some snap shots of the events.

Helping Hillcrest!

December 11, 2009 by streetangelsministry

Get excited! The Street Angels team is spreading their wings to Hillcrest!

Ocean Beach has been, and still is a very consistent place for our team to find homeless youth in need. However, part of the SAM vision is to expand the territory and to share love in more parts of San Diego.

Hillcrest is next on the list of observed places in need, so volunteers will be hitting the streets on Tuesday, December 22nd for our first pilot outing uptown. This outing will be an opportunity for team leaders to map out which streets to walk, and the amount of backpacks and supplies we’ll anticipate giving out.

We’re hopeful that this will be a location for successful giving, and will tentatively plan for Hillcrest outings every second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

This is a great opportunity for volunteers who have been unable to meet on Saturday late mornings. As always, volunteers new and seasoned are welcome to join.

Please meet at the Missiongathering Office at 5 pm on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. Bring warm clothes and comfortable shoes for walking!

San Diego, 92103

New ways to support Street Angels!

November 18, 2009 by streetangelsministry

After some additional thought behind the redesign of the Street Angels Ministry, new leadership roles have been created to improve organization of the, well, organization!

Last Wednesday, November 11, a meeting was held at the MG office to review the purpose and direction of SAM, as well as discussing the open roles to be filled. This is a great opportunity for those interested in supporting/volunteering with SAM, but may be unsure about the direct hands-on involvement with the outings.

To recap, the Street Angels Ministry’s mission statement is to provide survival items in a backpack to homeless youth and teens. Our purpose is to not preach anything, request anything from, or expect anything in return, but basically to show small acts of love from the community. If this is something that tugs at your heart strings, read on to see if you’d like to take on a supportive role!

The following are the leadership roles discussed during our meeting on Wednesday:

1. Public Relations – Keeps contact with donors, like Jedediah, on consistent basis. Goes to organizations for donations, awareness, etc. Develop a strategy to keep donors and the public regularly informed – ie. a newsletter.

2. Photographer - (maybe multiple volunteers) Takes lots of photos and gets them to PR and Social Networking

3. Social Networking - Updates Facebook, and blog with schedules, events, and recaps of events and outings.

4. Inventory Control – Keeps inventory organized and counted, reports to Administrator. Connects with Team leaders to make sure they are keeping things organized. Lead any volunteers who want to help with organizing. Let Sidney and James know what
inventory needs are.

5. Administrator - Organizes inventory, statistics, etc. to get to PR and SN. Connects with team leaders for stories of individuals helped, relationships being built, special situations to share on Social Networking or Public Relations.

6. Team Leaders- coordinate volunteers, following up with individuals who sign up. Lead groups on outings on a specific day/time. Should be proactive and take initiative when decisions must be made, like which direction to go, or who to approach.

7. Event Coordinator- coordinate events such as barbecues, fund raisers, documentary screening, etc. Connects with SAM Directors to obtain needed items from MG. Gives admin information to advertise about events, and a post-event results summary.

James and Sidney will act as the SAM Directors, who will oversee the processes with the volunteers. Volunteers will interact with each other within their roles, but will also communicate with the directors.

At the end of our meeting, the roles of PR, Social Networking, Inventory Control, and Administrator were filled. However, if you have interest in any of the above mentioned roles, assistance will surely be accepted. Future roles may develop, and current roles may also grow as the success of Street Angels continues.

Street Angels has great potential to grow into something more amazing than it already is, and it is the dedicated hardwork and loving hearts of our volunteers that continues to make it possible.

If interested, do not hesitate to contact James or Sidney for additional information:

October 31st Outing Update!

November 9, 2009 by streetangelsministry

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day! The weather was warm, the ocean breeze tingled the arm hairs, and happy Halloween spirit was abound. Perfect for a Street Angels outing!

The move to the new storage unit has really improved the SAM backpack preparation and inventory process! 12 backpacks were quickly made with our assembly line of 7 volunteers. The new organization of the unit is making it much easier to list the items in need. Even more wonderful than the storage unit was the actual outing.

Aside from the amazing parking spots we scored right by the boardwalk, within a couple minutes of walking we came across a group of homeless teens sitting under the pier. They eagerly (and graciously) accepted the backpack offerings. The blankets donated were also a big hit. These are particularly needed with fall in motion, and winter just around the corner. The teens shared their travels from Denver, St. Louis, Washington state, just to name a few. It is certainly an authentic emotional experience to talk to these teens, hear their stories, shake their hands, and see the gratitude in their eyes.

By the end of our journey, we left OB empty handed (a great thing!), excited about our upcoming outings. Please check the SAM Calendar page for updates on upcoming events, meetings, and outings.

Street Angels Presents: PACKED OUT

September 1, 2009 by streetangelsministry

Street Angels and Missiongathering Christian Church are proud to present and celebrate our first annual ultimate school supply drive for elementary students living in urban San Diego.

PACKED OUT

San Diego’s urban villages are continuing to be cultural and trendy hotspots for residents and visitors. Though our neighborhoods are “up and coming” or already here, there are needs to be met and have been urging our involvement for some time. So…we decided to take on a huge responsibility in hopes to impact our urban communities through revitalizing Street Angels and taking Street Angels to the hallways of local elementary schools by hosting an ultimate school supply drive called Street Angels Presents: PACKED OUT. Street Angels is prepared to equip every student in our community with backpacks full of supplies but only with the help of the community itself.

Restaurants and businesses throughout urban San Diego have supported PACKED OUT by hosting collection bins and encouraging their patrons and other community members to assist these families that do not have the means to provide their children with supplies. Thus far, hundreds of supplies are being collected and the community of Missiongathering Christian Church have provided almost 200 backpacks for Jefferson Elementary in North Park.

As more and more people are discussing PACKED OUT…more and more groups and individuals are becoming increasingly more willing to be involved in their community. From a collegiate residence to an architectural firm, our San Diego communities are eagerly willing to help these students and families that are in need.

If you’d like any information on PACKED OUT or how to do a supply drive for your own community…let us know! john@missiongathering.com

Stay tuned for more detailed updates!
